Our mission is to advance health and well-being across the life course and around the world. We pursue this by leading interdisciplinary research on health and aging across countries, shaping policies and practices for healthy longevity and resilient societies, equipping students and early-career researchers to bridge science, policy, and practice, and sharing knowledge, data, and tools within and beyond academia.

Research

Population aging is one of humanity’s greatest achievements but also presents profound challenges. Our research turns these challenges into opportunities for healthy longevity, helping individuals maintain well-being into later life and enabling societies to benefit from engaged older populations.

Life-course Dynamics

We study how work, retirement, and major life transitions and trajectories shape health and well-being over time. Using longitudinal and quasi-experimental methods to analyze data from self-reports to biomarkers, we generate evidence to inform effective policies and interventions.

We examine how macro-social contexts and public policies influence individual well-being across more than 100 countries, including low- and middle-income nations. Our work highlights the impact of pension design, unemployment protection, health policies, and cultural values.

We develop new tools to measure health and well-being and study disparities across populations. By innovating in measurement and data harmonization, we provide evidence to guide equitable policies and services to reduce risk of pain, loneliness, falls, and disease.

Impact

We inform and shape policies and practices that promote health and well-being for older adults and society at large. Our team has advised on social security, health, and aging reforms in Chile, the United States, China, and beyond. We also develop tools to measure well-being and predict dementia and falls, helping policymakers and practitioners design more effective interventions.

Training

Students and early-career researchers are central to CalvoLab. We provide opportunities in data analysis, programming, publishing, and professional development, preparing the next generation to link science with policy and practice. Interested candidates can contact us at calvolab@gmail.com

Dissemination

We are strongly committed to sharing our findings widely, within and beyond academia. Our work reaches diverse audiences through conferences, seminars, legislative hearings, media outlets, and public events such as Congreso Futuro.
